DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE (B.SC. COMPUTER SCIENCE, B.SC. MATHEMATICS)

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is one of the take-off Departments of the Spiritan University, Nneochi, established in the 2018/2019 Academic year. The Department’s academic programmes are designed in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) standards and course outlines drawn in line with national and international Universities standards. The department offers degrees in two programmes, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (B.Sc. Mathematics), and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (B.Sc. Computer Science).

PHILOSOPHY OF THE B.Sc. COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMME.

The purpose of the Computer Science Programme at Spiritan University is to provide all students with the foundation they will need to be able to face the ever-emerging scientific digital society. The department strives to make students comfortable with integrating technology into their other academic endeavours.

In a world in which technology is evolving at such a rapid pace, establishing this comfort level is as critical as giving students any specific technological skills. This familiarity will also enable them to make a more informed decision about their areas of specialization in the industry. Within the offerings of the Department, the purpose is to provide students with a variety of interests to pursue, ranging from programming to design, from software applications to working with networks. The Department recognizes that success in Computer Science is largely dependent upon cooperation and exploration; therefore, teachers and students seek to foster an environment where students learn cooperatively and assist each other to reach goals and objectives.

More than just developing young men and women who are competent in these disciplines, the larger goal of the department is to help students to be discerning users of these new technologies, who will use their abilities to help make themselves and their surrounding communities more technologically aware.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE B.Sc. MATHEMATICS PROGRAMME.

The objectives of an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree programme in Mathematics are to instil in students a sense of enthusiasm for Mathematics, an appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying. The programme provides students a broad and balanced foundation in Mathematics knowledge and practical skills in statistics and computer science. The programme develops in students the ability to apply their Mathematics knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in Mathematics. The programme aims at generating in students an appreciation of the importance of Mathematics in industrial planning, economic planning, environmental and social planning.
