INTRODUCTION:

Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN), one of the nation’s top Catholic, faith-based and conventional Private Universities in Nigeria, located in Umunneochi, one of the rural Local Government Areas in Abia State, Nigeria was established by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), Province of Nigeria South East in 2017. The Congregation is an International Religious Order in the Catholic Church founded in France on May 27, 1703. The members of this Religious Order began their educational and evangelization work in Nigeria in 1885.

Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN) was approved and licensed on December 6, 2017 by the Federal Executive Council (Government) of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Nigeria to operate as a Private and Conventional University. As a University, Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN) commenced academic activities in the 2018/2019 academic Session, with fifteen (15) departments/programmes in the Faculties of Natural & Applied Sciences, Arts, Management and Social Sciences. Also established at this time are the Units of General and Entrepreneurial Studies.

As one of the nation’s top Catholic (faith-based) private Universities, it is the only Institution of tertiary education of its kind in Nigeria owned by Spiritans. It is on record that Spiritan University Nneochi is the second full-fledged University owned by Spiritans worldwide, the first being Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit, Pittsburgh, USA founded in October 1878. Spiritan University Nneochi therefore shares the great and deep traditional education values, which Spiritans have been identified with for centuries. These same values, SUN is propagating by providing opportunities for the inculcation of academic excellence, positive value orientation through the acquisition, conservation, dissemination and application of knowledge for the production of globally competitive graduates.

The proprietors of Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN), members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), Province of Nigeria South East, have invested and continue to invest significantly in the development of personnel and infrastructural facilities in the quest to realise these set objectives and goals of the Institution. The availability of these high quality facilities and personnel resources was partly responsible for the recommendation and subsequent approval of Spiritan University Nneochi by the relevant Nigerian Higher Education Bodies to operate as a University. It is to be noted that the University successfully scaled through all the Fourteen (14) rigorous Steps for the Establishment of Private Universities in Nigeria.

Currently, the University Clinic is a six-bed-space facility with basic offices, spaces and equipment, serving a University community of about 200 persons (staff and students). The University Clinic is planned to be a Medical Centre and Hospital, with at least 215 bed-spaces when fully developed. The space for expansion is provided for in the University’s Master Plan.

The University is purposely designed and located in this rural community to be a “Growth Pole” factor with its expected economic and social multiplier effects when fully developed.
